Bloomberg News reported, citing informed sources, that the United States has refused to support a proposed G7 statement calling on Iran and Israel to de-escalate their conflict. The move highlights the extent of the divide between the U.S. administration and other G7 member states and signals former President Donald Trump’s support for Israeli strikes against Iran.
According to one source, President Donald Trump wants to continue pressuring Iran to prevent it from acquiring nuclear weapons and has shown no interest in endorsing the G7 leaders’ joint statement during the summit held in Alberta, Canada. Another source did not rule out the possibility that Trump might later approve a revised version of the statement.
According to the agency, the draft statement stresses preventing Tehran from obtaining nuclear weapons and expresses the G7’s intention to calm tensions and cooperate with regional partners to contain the conflict. However, the White House has declined to comment on Trump’s stance regarding the summit statement.
Despite U.S. forces assisting Israeli defense systems, Washington has refrained from directly engaging in the recent confrontation in which Israel targeted Iranian nuclear sites.
