Maariv Reveals a Representation Crisis: Declining Influence of Jewish Organizations in America After the Gaza War
Post-Gaza shifts deepen the gap between traditional leadership and the younger Jewish generation, weakening the influence of pro-Israel lobbies in Washington

NYN | Reports and Analyses
The Hebrew newspaper Maariv has revealed what it described as a “deep crisis” affecting Jewish leadership structures in the United States, pointing to an unprecedented decline in the influence of institutions that have long represented the political voice of American Jews in decision-making circles.
According to an analysis published by the newspaper, prominent traditional institutions — foremost among them the Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations — have lost a significant portion of their political influence and have gradually become symbolic entities lacking an active grassroots base, amid rapid transformations in the American political and social landscape.
Post-Gaza Transformations
The newspaper attributed this decline to the repercussions of the Gaza war, which coincided with the rise of the progressive wing within the Democratic Party and growing public criticism of Israeli policies, particularly in major cities such as New York City.
It noted that these developments have deepened the gap between traditional Jewish leadership and the younger Jewish generation, which has become more inclined to adopt critical positions toward the Israeli government and less connected to the historical institutions that once monopolized representation of the community.
“The Myth of the Seventy Organizations”
Maariv criticized what it called the “myth of the seventy organizations,” referring to the number promoted by the Conference of Presidents as an umbrella framework encompassing dozens of Jewish bodies. The newspaper argued that these figures are misleading, stressing that current leaders struggle to identify even a limited number of organizations that are genuinely active on the ground.
It also pointed to a leadership vacuum and the absence of figures who enjoy broad consensus within the community, reflecting — according to the analysis — an unprecedented representation crisis.
Broader Political Implications
The newspaper concluded that full alignment with the policies of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has contributed to eroding trust among progressive and younger currents, weakening the ability of traditional Jewish institutions to influence American public opinion or defend the Israeli narrative within one of their most historically significant arenas of influence.
Observers believe these shifts could reshape the nature of the relationship between the Jewish community in the United States and Israel, amid a rapidly and profoundly changing American political environment.
