The Assembly of Experts in Iran announced, during an extraordinary meeting held on Sunday night, the appointment of Mojtaba Khamenei as the new Supreme Leader of the Islamic Republic, succeeding his late father, Ali Khamenei.

The decision came in an official statement issued by the council, which confirmed that the process of selecting the new leader was carried out despite the sensitive security and military circumstances the country is currently facing.

The statement said the council “did not hesitate for a single moment to fulfill its constitutional duty to select the leader of the Islamic system,” noting that the offices of the Assembly of Experts’ secretariat were subjected to bombardment that resulted in the deaths of several employees and security personnel amid the ongoing military escalation.

Third Supreme Leader of the Islamic Republic

With the appointment of Mojtaba Khamenei, he becomes the third Supreme Leader since the establishment of the Iranian Revolution, a position that represents the highest authority within Iran’s power structure.

The Supreme Leader holds broad powers, including command of the armed forces and oversight of the state’s general policies. The role also carries direct influence over decisions of war and peace, while other state institutions—including the presidency—operate within the framework defined by the Supreme Leader.

Who Is Mojtaba Khamenei?

Mojtaba Khamenei was born in 1969 and is the second son of the late Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei. Over the past years, he has been regarded as an influential figure within Iran’s circles of power.

His name has long been associated with influence over certain political and religious affairs within the ruling establishment, and he has on several occasions been mentioned as one of the most prominent candidates to succeed his father as Supreme Leader.

Political Connections

In recent years, Mojtaba Khamenei has appeared at a number of events alongside prominent figures in Iran’s political scene, including former Iranian President Hassan Rouhani, former Parliament Speaker Ali Larijani, and former Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif—a presence that observers viewed as a sign of his growing role in political life.

He also has family ties with notable political figures, having married Zahra Haddad-Adel, daughter of Iranian politician Gholam-Ali Haddad-Adel, the former speaker of the Iranian parliament.

A New Phase in Iranian Leadership

The selection of Mojtaba Khamenei comes at a highly sensitive moment for Iran, amid military tensions and regional escalation, placing the new leadership before significant political and security challenges in the coming period.
