The Guardian: Washington–Tehran Agreement Threatens to End Netanyahu’s Political Career

The British newspaper argues that the Israeli prime minister is the biggest loser from the U.S.–Iran understanding, while Trump is attempting to market the agreement as a victory despite growing criticism.

The British newspaper The Guardian has argued that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is facing what could be the most serious political consequences of his career following the framework agreement reached between the United States and Iran. According to the newspaper, Netanyahu appears to be the biggest loser from the outcome of the understanding.

Failure of the Military Option

The newspaper stated that the war waged by the United States and Israel against Iran failed to achieve the objectives that had been promoted beforehand. It argued that the conflict embodied Netanyahu’s long-standing approach of relying on military force as the primary means of shaping political and security realities in the region.

It added that the outcome of the confrontation ran contrary to expectations, ending instead with a political agreement that granted Tehran a strengthened negotiating position, while leaving Washington’s allies—most notably Netanyahu—facing growing political and strategic challenges.

Trump Seeks to Market the Agreement

The Guardian noted that U.S. President Donald Trump is attempting to convince both the American public and his allies within the Republican Party that the agreement signed in Paris represents a significant political and diplomatic achievement. However, the newspaper said that this narrative has been met with considerable skepticism and criticism internationally.

The report suggested that Trump may nevertheless be able to weather the political repercussions of the agreement within the United States, despite what it described as the atmosphere of doubt and ridicule that accompanied its announcement.

Netanyahu’s Future at Stake

The report emphasized that the political consequences of the agreement could be far more severe for Netanyahu, indicating that its repercussions may undermine his political future and potentially bring an end to his tenure as Israel’s prime minister.

The newspaper concluded by highlighting what it described as a striking political irony: Trump finds himself defending the agreement and presenting it as a political success, while Netanyahu faces a deepening crisis that may force him to pay the highest political price for the outcome of the U.S.–Iran understanding.
