Taiz: Mounting Anger and a City on Fire

NYN | News

The city of Taiz is experiencing a growing wave of public unrest following the assassination of Iftihan Al-Mashhary, Executive Director of the Sanitation Fund, who was shot dead by gunmen last Thursday—a crime that has sparked widespread protests against coalition-affiliated authorities.

The city’s streets have turned into a massive protest zone, with angry demonstrators demanding the dismissal of local officials and accountability for the armed gangs accused of involvement in the assassination.

Saturday’s protests extended beyond street marches, as sanitation workers launched a full strike and set up protest tents in front of the local authority’s headquarters, leading to piles of garbage accumulating across the city.

Dozens of women also took part in protests outside the Taiz police headquarters, denouncing the lack of security and demanding justice for the victim, amid accusations that armed factions aligned with the Islah Party were involved in the crime.

A major demonstration is expected to take place on Sunday, starting from Al-Mashhary’s hometown of Al-Mashawla and heading toward the city—a move aimed at increasing public pressure on authorities, who are accused of ignoring earlier warnings about threats the victim had been receiving.

Protesters hold the security forces fully responsible for failing to apprehend the perpetrators and warn that continued inaction will lead to even larger protests in the coming days.
