The Washington Post revealed that the top US general in Europe issued a warning to the US Department of Defense (Pentagon) regarding the declining capacity of the US Navy to sustain protection for Israel. This comes as a result of a shortage in naval forces and the depletion of defensive munition stockpiles amid the ongoing war with Iran.

The newspaper explained that continuous military operations lasting nearly five months have imposed unprecedented pressure on US military capabilities, particularly following the collapse of peace talks between Washington and Tehran and the resumption of mutual attacks on a near-daily basis.

Munitions Depletion and Overstretched Military Duties

According to the report, the US Navy faces growing challenges due to the multiplicity of its assigned missions, which include enforcing a naval blockade on Iranian ports, securing navigation in the Strait of Hormuz, and participating in the defense of Israel by intercepting Iranian and Yemeni missiles.

The report noted that internal Pentagon assessments showed US forces bore the largest share of defense operations for Israel, with American missile defense systems and naval interceptors used at rates exceeding the deployment of Israeli air defense systems.

Declining Readiness and High Deployment Costs

The publication highlighted that maintenance issues and eroding military readiness have further complicated the US Navy’s position, despite the wide deployment of destroyers and aircraft carriers across the Mediterranean, the Arabian Sea, and the Red Sea as part of operations Washington claims aim to protect navigation and counter regional threats.

It added that the United States continues to maintain a military presence in the Red Sea, coinciding with Saudi-led attempts to assemble a naval coalition aimed at ensuring freedom of navigation in the region.

Questions Surrounding Washington’s Strategy

The report emphasized that pressure is not limited to the military domain but extends to the US domestic front, where political criticism is mounting regarding the financial cost of the war and its economic repercussions. This comes amid escalating questions about the US administration’s strategy to conclude the conflict and avoid further drain on military forces and resources.
