Eilat Under Fire: Struggling Economy and Anxious Residents

NYN | News

The Israeli city of Eilat is facing mounting pressure following a series of attacks carried out by forces from Sanaa, the most notable of which occurred last Thursday when a drone struck a building in the city center and forced the temporary closure of Ramon Airport’s airspace.

Eilat’s mayor, Eli Lankri, warned in statements to Yedioth Ahronoth that the recent events evoke memories of “the early months of the war,” describing the latest attack as having “passed by a miracle.” He called for an urgent investigation and the elimination of what he termed “the Houthi threat.”

Lankri noted that Eilat has received over 60,000 displaced people since the war began and spent six months on the verge of economic collapse due to its reliance on tourism.

He added: “We need the city to be strong both in terms of security and the economy, and that requires a comprehensive government plan to confront the current challenges.”

According to Israel’s Channel 12, air raid sirens were activated late during the drone strike, preventing residents from reaching shelters in time.

On the same day, forces from Sanaa also launched a missile attack on the city of Jaffa, driving millions of Israelis into shelters and forcing authorities to shut down the airspace over Ben Gurion Airport.

Ramon Airport had previously been targeted by a drone strike that Israeli air defenses failed to intercept.
