Richard Weitz, Director of the Hudson Institute’s American Military Analysis, stated on Tuesday that defeating the forces aligned with the Sanaa government or what he described as the “Houthis” is a difficult matter.
During his appearance on the American channel “Alhurra,” Richard Weitz explained, “It is difficult to deter the Houthis because they believe that God is on their side, which explains their success for years against stronger forces in the past and now with Western countries.”
He spoke about how the forces aligned with the Sanaa government have “greater incentives than others to attack Western targets, and they cannot be prevented or controlled.”
Statements have been made recently by a number of officers and military commanders (American and European) confirming the effectiveness, accuracy, and speed of the weapons of the forces aligned with the Sanaa government, as well as the failure of defense systems to intercept many of them.
Since mid-October last year, the forces aligned with the Sanaa government have started carrying out military operations against “Israel” and preventing Israeli ships or those associated with them from crossing the Red Sea and the Arabian Sea. They condition the cessation of their operations on “stopping the aggression on Gaza and lifting the blockade,” as stated in the military statements announced by the spokesperson for the forces aligned with the Sanaa government, Yahya Saree, following any military operation they carry out.
In contrast, the European Union announced on February 19, 2024, the launch of a military operation called “Aspidus” led by Italy in the Red Sea. The United States also announced the launch of an operation called “Guardian of Prosperity,” aimed at countering the attacks carried out by the forces aligned with the Sanaa government against “Israel,” in addition to the airstrikes conducted by the United States and Britain in Yemen. This prompted the forces aligned with the Sanaa government to include American and British ships, whether commercial or military, in the target list and prevent them from crossing the Red Sea and the Arabian Sea.
