Former Saudi Intelligence Chief Turki Al-Faisal Says Riyadh Engages with Houthis Regarding Yemen, Calls for Deescalation

Former Saudi intelligence chief Turki Al-Faisal stated that Riyadh is engaging with the Houthi movement (Ansar Allah) regarding the situation in Yemen, and indicated that the Kingdom is calling on all parties to de-escalate.

This came in a televised interview published by Princeton University’s School of Public and International Affairs on their YouTube channel, where Al-Faisal discussed the situation in Yemen amidst the ongoing escalation between the Houthis and the United States and its allies.

Al-Faisal considered that there have been shifts in the positions between the two sides, noting that those who previously called on Riyadh to engage with the Houthis are now in conflict with them. He stated, “This was not possible, but it happened,” adding, “The intensity of the missiles and drones must be reduced.”

Turki Al-Faisal said, “Saudi Arabia was facing condemnation even from its allies regarding the latest developments in Yemen, before the Gaza war.” He said, “I do not have an explanation regarding the listing of the Houthis on the US terrorism list, then their removal by the current US President Joe Biden’s administration, before they were re-listed again.”

He added, “The planes bombing the Houthis are American, French and British, not Saudi,” stating, “I do not have an explanation for this matter.”
