The British newspaper “Morning Star” reported on British activists opposing the war waged by their government alongside the United States on Yemen, stating that the recent Western airstrikes in Yemen “show that our politicians have no humanity.”
The newspaper noted that the recent joint U.S.-British strikes in Yemen resulted in the deaths of 16 people and injuries to more than 40 others, all of whom were civilians, following bombings in the capital Sanaa, the port of Hodeidah, and Taiz.
Lindsey German, one of the coordinators of the Stop the War Coalition, told the British newspaper: “Rishi Sunak and the United States have once again bombed one of the poorest countries in the world to enable Israel to continue committing genocide in Gaza and slaughtering children sheltering in their tents in Rafah.”
German criticized the British Prime Minister for his supportive stance towards Israel in its genocidal war in Gaza and the airstrikes carried out by Britain and the U.S. on Yemen. She considered British politicians to “have no humanity at all.”
The newspaper highlighted that the Sanaa government forces, referred to as the “Houthis,” have intensified their attacks on ships in the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden in recent months, “demanding Israel end the war in Gaza, which has claimed the lives of over 36,000 Palestinians.”
The Peace Pledge Union (PPU) described the recent British airstrikes on Yemen as “a dangerous and irresponsible escalation,” according to the newspaper. PPU spokesperson Albert Beale stated: “In the context of the seemingly endless cycle of violence and war in that part of the world, the last thing needed is to expand it.”
He added: “The only viable future path is de-escalation and abandoning the ridiculous idea that such situations will be resolved through more and more killing.”
Since last November, the Sanaa government forces have begun targeting Israeli ships and related vessels in the Red and Arabian Seas before announcing the extension of their operations to part of the Indian Ocean. Recently, they announced the beginning of the fourth phase of escalation against ships “even in the Mediterranean Sea” to support Palestinians in Gaza. They state that their operations against “Israel” will continue until the latter stops the genocide in Gaza and lifts the blockade.
In response, the United States and Britain launched airstrikes on Yemen, which are still ongoing. In turn, the Sanaa government forces announced that their operations would include targeting American and British commercial and military ships in response to what they called the “American-British aggression.”
On February 19, 2024, the European Union announced the launch of a military operation named “Aspides,” led by Italy in the Red Sea, while the United States announced an operation named “Guardian of Prosperity,” both aiming to counter the attacks launched by the Sanaa government forces against “Israel.”
