Russia’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Vassily Nebenzia, stated that the strikes by the US- and UK-led coalition against the Houthis in Yemen have not weakened their capabilities but have instead bolstered their reputation in the region.
During a UN Security Council session on Monday, Nebenzia said, “Some countries, instead of working to calm the situation, try to put out the fire with gasoline and prefer to use force. This particularly concerns the situation in the Red Sea, where the so-called coalition led by the US and the UK is conducting blatant aggression against Yemen.”
He continued, “Despite the ongoing bombardment of this sovereign Middle Eastern state’s territory for almost six months, it has not affected the Houthis’ military capabilities, which we clearly realized during their attack on Tel Aviv. On the contrary, the movement’s reputation in the region has strengthened, and the frequency of strikes on commercial ships has increased.”
Nebenzia added that “Russia categorically rejects the use of force against Yemeni parties… At the same time, we continuously call for ensuring international maritime navigation and condemn any actions that threaten the safety of ships.”
It is noteworthy that the “Ansar Allah” (Houthis) movement announced last November that it would target ships “linked to Israel” in the region in response to the Israeli military operation in the Gaza Strip.
The US, the UK, and several of their allies have formed a coalition called “Sentinel of Prosperity” to protect commercial ships in the Red Sea and the Bab al-Mandeb Strait, launching strikes on targets within Yemen since last January.
