Outgoing US President Joe Biden stated that Sana’a government forces pose a significant threat to US forces, military vessels, and international navigation in the Red Sea.
In a message to Congress as part of his War Powers Report, Biden explained that since November 2023, Sana’a forces have launched a series of attacks targeting US forces, aircraft, and military ships, claiming they also threaten commercial shipping in the Red Sea, the Bab al-Mandeb Strait, and the Gulf of Aden.
He noted that these attacks not only endanger the safety of ships and their crews but also threaten regional political and economic stability.
Biden added that US forces have conducted targeted strikes on sites and facilities in Yemen used to support Sana’a’s attacks in the Red Sea. He stated that these operations aim to protect US forces and strategic interests while weakening Sana’a’s capability to carry out further attacks.
The US President reiterated the ongoing coordination between Washington, Riyadh, Yemen’s internationally recognized government in Aden, and regional partners to provide defensive capabilities against what he described as threats from Iran and its affiliates, as well as threats from al-Qaeda and ISIS in the Arabian Peninsula.
It is worth noting that the Sana’a government has imposed a naval blockade on Israeli navigation and affiliated ships in solidarity with the Palestinian people in Gaza, while the United States continues to protect Israel and its commercial interests.
