Anger Erupts: Public Political Confrontation Between Government Partners

NYN | News

Signs of renewed political tension have emerged within the camp of Yemen’s internationally recognized government, after the Southern Transitional Council (STC) sharply criticized Foreign Minister Shaye al-Zandani for statements he made denying any discussion of a two-state option in Yemen during an interview with Bahrain’s Akhbar Al-Khaleej newspaper.

In a statement issued by its official spokesperson, the STC said that al-Zandani’s remarks constitute — in its words — an affront to what it describes as the “southern cause,” and contradict existing political understandings and previous agreements, referring specifically to the Riyadh Agreement and its consultations, as well as understandings with the Arab Coalition.

The STC affirmed that what the minister said represents a personal opinion and does not reflect the official stance or shared commitments, describing it as an exclusionary approach that contradicts the principles of partnership and political balance.

The council called on the government to issue a clear position regarding the foreign minister’s statements and to take steps to prevent a recurrence of what it described as “violations” that undermine consensus within the government.

It is worth noting that these developments coincide with the anniversary of the signing of the Riyadh Agreement on November 5, 2019 — the deal that enabled the Southern Transitional Council to participate in the internationally recognized government.
