The governorate of Shabwa is witnessing a new escalation in the pace of U.S. airstrikes, after a drone carried out a targeted strike just after midnight on Monday against a gathering of individuals believed to be affiliated with Al-Qaeda in the Khoura area of Markha Al-Sufla District, western Shabwa.
The operation resulted in the deaths of seven people, including Saqr Al-Humaikani and Mohammed Khamis bin Arfaj Al-Dahmi, the son of one of the organization’s prominent leaders who was killed in a previous strike.
According to local sources, the drone carried out a double strike — first targeting a site suspected of being used by members of the organization, then returning to bomb a vehicle that was leaving the area just minutes after the initial strike.
This operation comes as part of a series of U.S. drone attacks against Al-Qaeda leaders and sites across various regions of Yemen, based on the agreement signed between Washington and the regime of Ali Abdullah Saleh in 2003, which allowed the United States to conduct airstrikes and pursue Yemeni nationals under the banner of “counterterrorism.”
