All eyes of diplomatic missions at the United Nations are turning this evening toward the crucial UN Security Council session on extending the sanctions regime imposed on Yemen, just two days before it is set to expire in mid-November.
According to UN sources, the Council is scheduled to hold its session at 10:00 a.m. New York time (6:00 p.m. Yemen time) to vote on a draft resolution that would renew financial sanctions and the travel ban, as well as extend the mandate of the Panel of Experts supporting the Sanctions Committee established under Resolution 2140 (2014).
Under the most recent renewal, the sanctions regime on Yemen is due to expire on November 15, while the Panel of Experts’ mandate is set to end on December 15.
Sources indicate that the Council faces two main options: the first is a straightforward renewal of the current regime without substantial amendments; the second involves introducing limited changes based on the recommendations of the 2025 Panel of Experts’ report, which was submitted to the Security Council in mid-October.
The anticipated vote comes amid diverging positions among Council members regarding the effectiveness of sanctions in advancing the political process in Yemen, alongside growing calls from some parties to reconsider the existing mechanism and link it more closely to developments in the humanitarian situation and the political settlement process.
