Aden… Shocking Numbers: Rising Deaths and an Unstoppable “Fever”

NYN | News

Areas under the internationally recognized Yemeni government are witnessing widespread health concerns following newly released reports revealing a significant rise in dengue fever deaths and the transformation of some provinces into high-risk hotspots for the disease this year.

A recent statistic showed that around 60 people have died from dengue fever in areas controlled by the internationally recognized government during the current year, most of them in Aden.

The Health Media Officer at the Public Health Office in Taiz, Taysir Al-Saami, said in a post on his Facebook page on Thursday that 59 deaths from dengue fever have been recorded in government-held provinces since the beginning of 2025.

Al-Saami added that the total number of dengue fever infections in government-controlled areas has risen to 12,416 new cases this year, according to the epidemiological surveillance report.

He explained that 64% of the total deaths occurred in Aden, which recorded 38 deaths, despite having the lowest number of infections — only 2,579 cases — “a problem that requires investigation and study.”

He added that Lahj ranked second with 17 deaths during the same period, while the remaining deaths were distributed across other provinces.

Al-Saami pointed out that Taiz, which is considered a persistent hotspot for the disease, recorded only one death, despite reporting 3,512 infections, “a decrease of 80% compared to previous years.”
