The Ministry of Health and Environment in Sana’a issued a warning statement moments ago containing several preventive guidelines following the arrival of volcanic dust into parts of Yemeni airspace—particularly in the southwestern regions—due to a volcanic eruption in Ethiopia.
The ministry urged citizens not to leave their homes except for extreme necessity, and to adhere to safety measures when going out, including wearing masks and protective glasses, keeping car windows closed, driving slowly to avoid stirring ash on the roads, operating wipers cautiously, and avoiding spraying water forcefully on ash-contaminated glass.
The statement stressed the importance of keeping high-risk groups indoors during the dust wave. These include patients with asthma and COPD, tuberculosis patients, children and the elderly, pregnant women, and individuals with heart disease.
The ministry also emphasized proper handling of clothes and items contaminated with ash—removing them outside the home, rinsing with water before applying soap, and avoiding cleaning ash by blowing it away to prevent re-inhalation.
The ministry called on citizens to report any severe respiratory symptoms via the hotline 195 belonging to the ministry’s operations center, and to report any significant ash accumulation or cases of water contamination to the relevant authorities.
