Urgent Tribal Movements… Is Hadhramaut Turning into a New Battlefield?

NYN | News

Tensions have escalated in Hadhramaut province following provocative remarks by Abu Ali Al-Hadhrami, the UAE-backed commander of the Security Support Forces, which observers described as incendiary and threatening social peace in the governorate.

In an official statement today, the Hadhramaut Inclusive Conference condemned Al-Hadhrami’s statements, stressing that the attack on Sheikh Amr bin Habrish and the leadership of the Hadhramaut Tribal Alliance represents an attempt to destabilize the situation and drag the province into conflicts that do not serve its interests.

The statement noted that the community in Hadhramaut has repeatedly succeeded in thwarting attempts at incitement, maintaining its legitimate demands since July 2014.

The Conference held the Presidential Leadership Council fully responsible for the worsening situation due to its failure to comply with the commitments outlined in its statement issued on 7 January 2025, particularly regarding the investment of oil revenues in electricity projects, empowering the people of Hadhramaut in security and military decision-making, ensuring political participation, and allocating local resources for the development of the province.

The statement emphasized that Hadhramaut’s leaders are a red line, and that targeting them constitutes a threat to Hadhrami dignity and unity. It affirmed that the unified will of Hadhramaut’s people is the guarantor of the province’s stability and the protection of its rights.

This escalation comes after threats made by Al-Hadhrami against Sheikh Amr bin Habrish, who is leading a broad movement demanding that Hadhramaut’s people be empowered to manage the province’s affairs and benefit from its resources.

Yesterday, Sheikh Amr bin Habrish Al-Aliyy, head of the Hadhramaut Tribal Alliance, called on the notables and tribal leaders of the governorate to attend a general meeting tomorrow, Thursday, at Al-Hadbah in the Al-Alyab area, to discuss recent developments and adopt the necessary positions to protect Hadhramaut and preserve its stability.

Two days ago, Abu Ali Al-Hadhrami appeared in a tribal meeting with the “Tha’in” tribes, surrounded by heavy security, where he delivered a harsh speech attacking Sheikh bin Habrish and the forces loyal to him.
