An investigative report published by The Intercept has revealed what it describes as sharp contradictions between official Pentagon figures regarding U.S. losses in the war against Iran and independent field estimates and analyses, raising broad questions about transparency and credibility within the American military establishment.

A Major Gap Between Official Figures and Reality

According to the investigation, the Pentagon officially acknowledges the deaths of only 13 soldiers and injuries to 303 others. However, alternative estimates suggest that the real number of casualties may exceed 750 military personnel killed and wounded.

The report argues that this reflects an official effort to minimize publicly announced figures in order to contain domestic anger and reduce public pressure.

Large-Scale Military Interventions

The report also stated that U.S. President Donald Trump significantly expanded military interventions during his second term, with the United States reportedly becoming involved in more than 20 military operations and armed conflicts during the first 15 months of his presidency, ranging from Africa to South America and extending to the war against Iran.

Humanitarian Consequences and Civilian Casualties

Experts interviewed by the publication said that the military strategy employed — heavily reliant on large-scale airstrikes — contributed to extensive damage in densely populated areas and made it difficult to independently verify the true number of casualties, both military and civilian.

Accusations of Expanding Operations Beyond Legal Limits

The investigation highlighted the role of U.S. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth in expanding the scope of military operations and overseeing actions described as exceeding legal boundaries.

According to the report, Annie Shiel stated that catastrophic damage had occurred in several regions, including Yemen, Iran, Somalia, as well as areas in the Caribbean and the Pacific.

Controversial Official Justifications

Meanwhile, the Secretary of Defense has reportedly adopted rhetoric portraying these losses as part of broader American military objectives — a stance that has sparked growing debate over the cost of these wars and their humanitarian consequences, amid increasing calls within the United States for greater transparency and accountability.
