The World Socialist Web Site (WSWS) revealed on Saturday a shocking incident at the port of Genoa, Italy, where dozens of workers blocked the Saudi ship Bahri Yanbu, which was carrying weapons and ammunition bound for Israel, imposing a blockade in an unprecedented act of protest.
According to the report, the ship had arrived from the United States to load military equipment, but port workers discovered that it was already carrying a shipment of weapons and ammunition intended for Israel. Around 40 workers boarded the vessel to document the cargo, despite efforts to prevent them from doing so.
Following the incident, the Genoa Port Authority announced its intention to discuss the establishment of a “permanent observatory on arms smuggling.” The protesting workers, under the slogan “We don’t work for war,” stated that they had previously intercepted a similar weapons shipment on the same ship back in 2019.
José Nivoi, leader of the “Autonomous Collective of Port Workers,” warned that handling such shipments makes workers complicit in war crimes and genocide in Gaza. He emphasized that their stance reflects their firm rejection of the use of Italian ports to support armed conflicts.
