Reuters: War on Iran Fuels Global Energy Fears and Threatens Another Surge in Oil Prices

Escalating confrontation between Washington and Tehran, along with risks to shipping through the Strait of Hormuz and the Red Sea, heightens concerns over disruptions to global oil supplies

Reuters has warned of growing concerns over the security of global energy supplies as military tensions between the United States and Iran continue to escalate. Increasing threats to maritime navigation in the Strait of Hormuz and the Red Sea have intensified fears of disruptions to global oil flows, pushing oil prices sharply higher amid expectations of further gains if the crisis persists.

Oil prices climbed nearly 5% on Friday, driven by rising geopolitical risks across the region. Brent crude rose 4.73% to $88.21 per barrel, while U.S. West Texas Intermediate (WTI) gained 4.81% to $82.75 per barrel, bringing their cumulative gains in recent weeks to nearly 16%.

Shipping Disruptions Add Pressure on Supply

Reuters attributed the price surge to declining oil flows through the Strait of Hormuz, a strategic waterway that carries roughly 20% of global oil supplies. Escalating exchanges of military strikes and attacks on commercial vessels have heightened concerns over potential bottlenecks in energy exports.

Diesel refining margins also surged to record highs amid growing fears of supply shortages and rising shipping and marine insurance costs.

Red Sea Joins the Risk Zone

The agency noted that increasing threats to navigation in the Red Sea and the Bab al-Mandab Strait have added a new dimension to the crisis, with potential implications for global oil exports and international trade.

Saudi Arabia has already redirected more than 70% of its oil exports through the Red Sea port of Yanbu in an effort to reduce its reliance on the Strait of Hormuz.

Reuters added that the region has witnessed reciprocal attacks in recent days targeting facilities linked to the energy sector, while global supply concerns continue to be exacerbated by ongoing conflicts in the Middle East and the war in Ukraine.

Fears of Another Price Rally

Market observers believe that continued military escalation in the region, coupled with any further disruption to key maritime chokepoints, could push oil prices even higher in the coming weeks. Energy markets remain highly sensitive to any interruption in global supply flows, with direct consequences for fuel prices, supply chains, and the broader global economy.
