Yemeni Blockade Threatens 7 Million Barrels Per Day… Military Report: Timing of Yanbu Port Targeting Disrupts Saudi Oil Export Strategy
An international report confirms that the Yemeni naval blockade has placed the East-West Pipeline and the Port of Yanbu in danger, stripping Saudi Arabia of its primary alternative for oil exports.

The military and security news outlet Defense Security Asia emphasized that the decision by Yemeni armed forces to impose a naval blockade on Saudi-linked shipping represents a strategic shift in the course of the conflict. This move extends the impact of operations to one of the most vital Saudi oil export routes via the Red Sea.
The report explained that the decision was not limited to impacting maritime shipping traffic; it extended to cover the Saudi East-West Pipeline as well as the Red Sea Port of Yanbu. Riyadh had recently relied heavily on Yanbu as a primary outlet for oil exports following partial disruptions to shipping traffic through the Strait of Hormuz.
Direct Pressure on Saudi Oil Exports
The report noted that the missile and drone capabilities of the Yemeni armed forces now pose a direct pressure factor on Saudi oil exports—approaching 7 million barrels per day. This elevates the risk level facing energy supplies and further complicates the regional landscape.
It added that these developments push the conflict into a phase transcending traditional military dimensions, directly affecting global energy security and international oil supply chains.
A “Double Chokepoint” Dilemma
According to the report, military planners in the coalition face what it described as a “strategic nightmare”: simultaneous pressures on both the Strait of Hormuz and the Bab al-Mandab Strait routes. This severely restricts Saudi Arabia’s options for transporting its oil exports to global markets.
The report highlighted that this scenario robs Riyadh of the advantage of relying on an alternative route, as both primary and backup export channels have become vulnerable to military developments in the region.
Blockade’s Timing Amplified Its Impact
The report pointed out that the significance of the Yemeni decision lies not only in its content, but also in its timing. It coincided with Saudi Arabia ramping up oil exports through the Port of Yanbu to record levels exceeding 7 million barrels per day. Consequently, a substantial portion of oil tanker traffic now passes through areas within the military reach of the Yemeni armed forces along the western coast.
A Strategic Vulnerability
The report concluded by emphasizing that Saudi Arabia’s reliance on a single alternative export outlet exposed a strategic vulnerability in its energy security architecture. It warned that any further escalation could broaden the confrontation and heighten risks threatening global energy markets, as Yemeni armed forces remain prepared to handle various potential scenarios.
