A boat carrying a group of irregular migrants capsized while attempting to cross the Mediterranean Sea toward Europe, off the coast of Tobruk, eastern Libya, resulting in the death of one Yemeni migrant and the rescue of six others.
Libyan media reported on Monday that the boat was carrying 25 refugees from Yemen and Sudan, and was en route to southern Europe when it overturned. The accident led to the death of one Yemeni, while coast guard units managed to rescue several others.
Rescue teams reportedly saved 24 irregular migrants, including 16 Sudanese, 6 Yemenis, and 2 Egyptians.
This incident comes less than a week after a similar tragedy in which at least 61 Sudanese migrants drowned when another boat sank off the same coast. It also follows a series of repeated incidents since the beginning of this year, which have claimed the lives of hundreds of migrants attempting to cross the Mediterranean to Europe.
