African Website: Saudi Arabia Searches for Anyone to Fight Yemen on Its Behalf and Protect Its Red Sea Shipping

Horn Review, an Ethiopian website, highlighted Saudi moves aimed at securing its maritime shipping lanes in the Red Sea amid escalating tensions with Yemen, noting that Riyadh is stepping up contacts in search of external support to protect its maritime interests and oil supply lines.

In an analytical report authored by researcher Yonas Yezzu, the site explained that recent developments have pushed Saudi Arabia to reconsider its security approach to the Red Sea region, coinciding with what it described as accelerating Yemeni responses and mounting pressure on Saudi-linked shipping.

Naval Blockade Forces Riyadh to Recalculate

According to the report, recent developments began following Saudi escalation against Sana’a, before Yemeni authorities announced last July the imposition of maritime measures targeting Saudi-linked vessels in the Red Sea and Bab al-Mandab strait, in response to the ongoing war and blockade.

The site noted that these developments were accompanied by attacks targeting tankers and energy facilities near Yanbu and Jizan, at a time when regional maritime traffic experienced growing disruptions, impacting insurance costs, energy prices, and oil transit routes.

Saudi Moves to Secure Oil Exports

Horn Review suggests that fears of expanding targets have driven Riyadh to intensify its political and security movements, while reorganizing its priorities in the Red Sea and Sudan region to establish broader defense arrangements that safeguard its supply lines and maritime corridors.

The report highlighted that Saudi Arabia’s reliance on Red Sea ports and maritime routes has become increasingly sensitive amid rapid security developments, prompting the kingdom to seek international partners capable of providing a protective umbrella for shipping.

Riyadh Seeks a Broader Maritime Coalition

According to the Ethiopian report, Saudi Arabia is attempting to broaden its circle of support by reaching out to the United States and several European nations to involve them in defensive naval arrangements or a coalition focused on protecting vital waterways and securing Saudi-linked vessel traffic.

The report indicates that these moves reflect Riyadh’s efforts to offload part of the burden of protecting shipping lanes onto international partners, given the complex security landscape in the Red Sea and the growing risks facing Saudi-linked vessels.

Western Hesitation to Protect Saudi Arabia

Conversely, Horn Review speaks of hesitation among certain Western parties regarding participation in any new security arrangements, noting that Western officials have requested further details on the nature of the proposed coalition, as well as the scope of commitments and duties required of participating nations.

According to the report, several Western governments require more time for consultations before making a decision, given the complexities of the regional landscape and calculations tied to expanding military involvement in the Red Sea.

A Mounting Saudi Dilemma

The report concludes that Saudi Arabia faces a growing challenge in safeguarding its maritime routes and oil interests without engaging unilaterally in an open-ended confrontation. This explains, according to Horn Review, its accelerated efforts to secure US and European support along with broader security arrangements in the Red Sea.

The report posits that sustained maritime tensions will leave Riyadh with increasingly difficult choices, particularly if pressures on shipping persist and the costs of insuring vessels and energy transit routes continue to rise.
