British Report: Lebanon Ceasefire Agreement Is a “Surrender Document” Granting Israel Freedom of Action
Middle East Eye criticizes the Lebanese government, asserting that the agreement failed to require Israel to halt attacks or withdraw from occupied territories

The British news website Middle East Eye has sharply criticized the Lebanese government over its signing of the recent ceasefire document, arguing that the agreement is heavily biased in Israel’s favor and entrenches a reality that lacks even the minimum level of balance between the two parties to the conflict.
In a report titled “Lebanon’s Government Handed the Country Over to Israel,” the outlet stated that the signed document cannot be described as a comprehensive ceasefire agreement. Rather, it appears to be a framework that imposes unilateral obligations on Lebanon while placing no clear obligations on Israel.
Absence of Israeli Commitments
The report noted that the text of the agreement contains no provisions requiring Israel to halt its military operations or withdraw from occupied Lebanese territory. It also makes no reference to the issue of prisoners or guarantees for the return of civilians displaced by the war.
According to the report, the provisions focus primarily on ending Hezbollah’s operations and securing its withdrawal from southern Lebanon, which observers view as evidence of a clear imbalance in the nature of the obligations imposed on the two sides.
Concerns Over Lebanese Sovereignty
The website argued that the adopted framework poses significant challenges to Lebanese national sovereignty, particularly given the continued uncertainty surrounding future Israeli attacks and the possibility of their recurrence in the absence of binding international guarantees.
It added that what it described as Israel’s “freedom of action” within Lebanese territory had effectively been established through previous arrangements, and that the new agreement contains no measures to restrict these powers or establish clear mechanisms for preventing future attacks.
Criticism of the Lebanese Authorities
The report contended that the Lebanese authorities’ conduct during the negotiations reflects an approach based on making political and security concessions in order to preserve international support. It noted that numerous Lebanese political and media figures have objected to the agreement’s provisions, arguing that they are disproportionate to the scale of the losses and damage Lebanon suffered during the recent confrontations.
The controversy comes at a time when Lebanon is witnessing extensive debate over the implications of the agreement and its impact on the future of security and sovereignty in the country, amid internal divisions regarding its ability to achieve lasting stability and bring an end to the escalation in the south.
