The New York Times reported on a movement it described as a “rare challenge” to the Jordanian leadership, after hundreds of political, legal, and academic figures signed a public letter demanding a review of the US military presence in the Kingdom.
According to the newspaper, the signatories warned that the close alliance between Jordan and the United States has come to pose, in their view, a threat to the country’s sovereignty. They called on the government to demand that Washington withdraw its military forces from Jordanian territory.
Criticism of the US Military Presence
The New York Times noted that the movement represents a rare public challenge to the Jordanian government, given the restrictions imposed by authorities on opposition activities and freedom of expression.
According to the paper, the signatories considered the continued US military presence an “unacceptable threat to Jordanian sovereignty”—a stance reflecting mounting domestic debate over the nature of the security and military relationship between Amman and Washington.
Iranian Message to Jordanians
In a related development, the Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) addressed a message to the Jordanian people, praising the stances taken by Jordanian figures and elites demanding the expulsion of US forces from the country.
In a statement, the IRGC described these stances as “courageous,” suggesting that the push by Jordanian figures to reject the US military presence applies pressure on the United States and its regional allies.
Addressing the Jordanian public, the message stated: “O honorable and conscious people of Jordan; your support, sincere cooperation, and especially the explicit stances taken by groups of Jordanian elites, have tightened the noose on the enemy and left it in a state of helplessness.”
Tehran: The Battle Continues Until the Exit of US Forces
The IRGC added that what it termed “the battle” would continue until the departure of US forces from the region, criticizing the US military presence and the policies pursued by Washington in the Middle East.
It declared that the region is “no place for a child-killing army,” referencing Iran’s opposition to the US military presence and the interventions Tehran attributes to Washington across the region.
This comes at a time of growing debate within regional states regarding the US military presence and its impact on national sovereignty, amid rising regional tensions and overlapping security and military dynamics between the US and its allies on one side, and Iran and its aligned forces on the other.
