American media reports have revealed indications of a shift in the U.S. position regarding the conflict with Iran, coinciding with a preliminary agreement between Washington and Tehran to extend the ceasefire for 60 days and begin talks on Iran’s nuclear program.

According to the Associated Press, statements by U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance reflected a retreat from the primary objective announced by President Donald Trump’s administration at the outset of military operations against Iran: the complete elimination of Iran’s nuclear program.

Speaking to reporters on Thursday evening, Vance stated that the United States “could significantly delay Iran’s nuclear program over the long term,” a position that the agency viewed as a notable departure from previous U.S. statements that had called for permanently ending Iran’s nuclear program.

In a related development, the agency cited a knowledgeable U.S. official as saying that American and Iranian negotiators had reached an initial understanding to extend the ceasefire for 60 days, while also launching a new round of discussions concerning Iran’s nuclear dossier.

Although no immediate official confirmation of the agreement was issued by the Iranian side, the U.S. Vice President acknowledged the existence of a preliminary understanding between the two parties, noting that some details and wording remain under discussion and that final approval still awaits President Trump’s decision.

Vance added that the U.S. administration is continuing to review several points related to the proposed memorandum of understanding, as hopes grow that the ceasefire can be solidified and a return to military escalation between the two sides can be avoided.

These developments come amid growing concerns over the fragility of the current ceasefire between the United States and Iran, with political and military tensions in the region remaining high. As a result, the success of the anticipated negotiations is expected to play a decisive role in shaping the course of the crisis in the coming period.
