American magazine Newsweek revealed that Saudi Arabia faces a complex security phase amid the ongoing repercussions of military escalation in Yemen. The publication noted that the failure of US and Israeli military operations to achieve decisive results against the capabilities of the Sana’a government forces has imposed growing challenges on the Kingdom’s security and cast a shadow over its economic and investment projects linked to “Vision 2030.”
Escalating Pressure on Energy and Shipping
The magazine explained that Yemeni military operations have intensified pressure on energy infrastructure and maritime shipping lanes, impacting the movement of energy transport through the Red Sea amid rising concerns over continued disruptions in one of the world’s most vital trade corridors.
The report added that targeted campaigns against Saudi-linked vessels have further complicated the maritime landscape, raising concerns regarding the effectiveness of alternative routes and their capacity to ensure the uninterrupted flow of trade and energy in the region.
Maritime Coalitions to Counter Threats
According to the report, Riyadh is seeking to bolster maritime security by supporting a 14-nation naval coalition aimed at protecting shipping lanes and vital sea passages in an effort to mitigate the security and economic fallout driven by recent developments.
Experts: War Is No Longer a Guaranteed Option
Newsweek quoted experts, including retired Brigadier General Abdullah bin Farah Al-Shayea and researcher Dan Ostrul, stating that the war in Yemen has proven that a military solution alone is insufficient to achieve stability. They warned that any return to a large-scale confrontation could inflict severe damage on the economic development trajectory and growth plans the Kingdom relies upon for the coming years.
Strategic Challenges Facing Riyadh
Newsweek concluded its report by noting that the continuation of Yemeni military operations, alongside the failure of previous US and Israeli campaigns to bring about a decisive shift in the conflict’s trajectory, confronts Saudi Arabia with escalating strategic challenges. This renders maintaining energy security, navigation stability, and economic project viability an urgent priority in the upcoming period.
