The American publication Washington Examiner warned that the escalating rift between Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates within the anti-Sana’a camp could usher in a new phase of conflict in southern Yemen. This development could adversely affect US strategy in the region and afford Sana’a an opportunity to consolidate its political and military standing.

The report explained that disagreements between the Saudi-backed Presidential Leadership Council and the UAE-backed Southern Transitional Council (STC) have intensified following recent developments in the south, along with subsequent shifts in the balance of power and the restructuring of the security and military landscape.

The report noted that leaders within the STC are highlighting an increased likelihood of fresh clashes erupting among anti-Sana’a factions. They warned that sustained security pressure, the targeting of leaders, and the suppression of protests could drive conditions toward a new armed rebellion across the southern governorates.

The newspaper added that tensions have heightened due to the restructuring of southern forces and the appointment of commanders loyal to Riyadh, alongside accusations that the Kingdom is marginalizing southern groups and curtailing their influence—further sharpening friction between the two sides.

According to the report, the STC considers the current Saudi policy toward Sana’a to be lenient, arguing that it has contributed to strengthening Sana’a’s influence. Consequently, the STC advocates for a firmer stance based on escalating both military and economic pressure.

The report also pointed out that the STC is striving to convince the United States that its vision aligns with Washington’s regional priorities. It calls for involving the UAE and other regional partners in any future military action rather than relying solely on the Saudi approach.

The Washington Examiner concluded its report by emphasizing that persistent divisions among anti-Sana’a forces could undermine American efforts in Yemen and grant Sana’a an opportunity to leverage its rivals’ discord, amid growing US focus on securing Red Sea navigation and addressing regional security challenges.
