The Washington Post reported that the recent attacks by Sana’a government forces, or what it referred to as “Houthi fighters,” on commercial ships in the Red Sea confirmed their ability to pose a sustained threat. It added that the U.S. campaign in the Red Sea is unable to deter and stop their attacks.
According to a report by the newspaper, Sana’a government forces continue their maritime attacks despite months of U.S.-led airstrikes in Yemen. These attacks have increased with the advanced arsenal that the “Houthis” now possess.
The newspaper confirmed the faltering American efforts to deter “Houthi” attacks. It cited former U.S. Ambassador to Yemen Gerald Feierstein, who said that American strikes in Yemen have not been able to hinder the “Houthis” capabilities or prevent them from acquiring advanced weapons, adding that their capabilities have increased and they have proven their ability to continue attacks.
Earlier today, Sana’a government forces announced targeting the U.S. aircraft carrier “Eisenhower” in the Red Sea, the third targeting since the beginning of June. The Pentagon announced that the aircraft carrier would leave the Red Sea today, to be replaced by another carrier.
Since late last year, Sana’a government forces have started hitting Israeli targets in the occupied Palestinian territories and targeting Israeli ships and those linked to them in the Red and Arabian Seas before announcing the extension of their operations to parts of the Indian Ocean. Recently, they announced the beginning of the fourth phase of escalation against ships “up to the Mediterranean Sea” to support Palestinians in Gaza. They affirmed that their operations against “Israel” would continue, stipulating the “end of aggression and lifting the siege on Gaza” to halt their military operations “supporting Gaza.”
In response, the U.S. and Britain launched airstrikes on Yemen, prompting Sana’a government forces to announce that their operations would include targeting American and British commercial and military ships in response to what they termed the “American-British aggression.”
On February 19, 2024, the European Union announced the launch of a military operation named “Aspid” led by Italy in the Red Sea, while the United States announced the launch of an operation named “Guardian of Prosperity,” both aiming to counter the attacks carried out by Sana’a government forces against “Israel.”
